Race for The Planet

On Saturday, March 11, 2023, NEOM hosted the first race of Season 3 of the electric racing series, Extreme E. "Desert X Prix" took place in the Kingdom for the third consecutive year over the course of two days and featured 10 international teams.

The Extreme E series is a new and innovative form of electric SUV racing in destinations affected by climate change around the world. The global series consists of five races and highlights the impact of climate change and environmental challenges in some remote locations in the world, promoting the trend towards the use of electric vehicles supporting efforts to reduce carbon emissions and create a better future for the planet.

To promote the event, Saudi Motorsport Company (SMC) produced a hero video featuring thrilling scenes which reflected the action and excitement of Extreme E races. The video demonstrated the challenges Extreme E drivers go through when piloting the championship vehicle, the Odyssey 21, over some of the world's most difficult terrains.

Visual effects technology (VFX) was utilized to simulate the race activity in the NEOM desert. In order to replicate the physical environment of the NEOM landscapes where the Desert X Prix was held, Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) was used. The NEOM terrains and Odyssey 21 car were constructed using 3D animation - recreating the race's real-world setting.
